Lists are the containers your subscribers live in. Each list has its own sender settings and custom fields, and forms, campaigns and automations all point at a list (or a segment of one).
Create a list
- Go to Lists and create a new list
- Give it a name and, optionally, a description
- Set the sender settings (below)
Most stores do well with one main list plus segments, rather than many small lists. Segments are dynamic and never overlap-mail the same person twice within a send.
Sender settings
Each list has a default sender:
- Sender name: what recipients see in their inbox ("MailingPlatform" beats "noreply")
- Sender email prefix: the part before the @; the domain is always your verified sending domain, so a prefix of
hellosends ashello@yourstore.com
These defaults are used by campaigns and automation emails targeting the list unless a campaign or Send Email step overrides them. If nothing is set anywhere, sends fall back to noreply@your-domain.
Custom fields
Lists carry custom fields beyond the built-ins (first name, last name, phone, birthday, gender). Add fields for anything you collect: city, shoe size, favorite category. Custom fields:
- Can be filled by imports, forms and the API
- Are available as merge tags under their field name (
{{city}}) - Can be used in segment criteria and automation profile filters
Managing subscribers
From the list you can add subscribers manually, import CSV files, export, search, and open any profile to see fields, status and activity. Statuses (active, pending, unsubscribed and so on) are explained in subscriber statuses.
Deleting a list
Deleting a list removes its subscribers from your account (they may still exist in other lists). Unsubscribes and blacklist entries are respected account-wide, so removing a list never "resets" someone's opt-out.
