Moving from Klaviyo, Mailchimp or another platform is CSV-based and usually takes an afternoon. This article covers what carries over automatically, what you rebuild, and the order to do it in.
What carries over via CSV
- Subscribers and profile fields: email, names, phone and so on
- Tags and custom fields: mapped to fields during import
- Subscription status: a status column (status / state / subscription_status) maps over, so unsubscribed contacts stay unsubscribed - this is important for both law and deliverability
The streaming importer handles files with 100,000+ rows.
What you rebuild (and why it is fast)
- Automation flows: abandoned cart, welcome, back in stock and post purchase ship as ready-made workflows you turn on and adjust - see creating an automation
- Email templates: the AI builder can recreate a design from a description and applies your brand profile (logo, colors) automatically
- Behavioral history: opens, clicks and order history cannot be imported, but order data rebuilds itself once your Shopify or WooCommerce store is connected
Recommended order
- Verify your sending domain - DNS can propagate while you do the rest
- Export lists from your old platform and import them, mapping the status column
- Connect your store
- Turn on the core flows (welcome, abandoned cart) and adjust the copy
- Send your first campaign, keep the old platform in read-only for a couple of weeks as reference
